In North America, interest in Yoga and its sister science Ayurveda (the Indigenous Medicine of India) is growing. Yoga and Ayurveda have their roots in the Veda’s, India’s ancient spiritual texts. Ayur means life, Veda means science. Ayurveda is the science of life, and is in itself a holistic system of medicine. As a part of Ayurveda, Yoga practices are used for the maintenance of health in the body and mind, in the treatment of illness and injury. As a part of therapy, Yoga is best applied to suit the individual needs of each person and practiced on a daily basis. Together Yoga and Ayurveda provide centuries old tools for the prevention and treatment of illness in both the body and mind.
Information on the benefits of yoga postures on health is abundant. Both yoga postures and breathing techniques increase circulation and blood flow to all of the tissues, cells and channels of the body. Increased circulation aids in the removal of metabolites and residue from tissues, bringing oxygen, vitamins, and minerals, providing, fuel, cleansing and healing. Regular yoga practice and deep relaxed breathing maintains the smooth flow of prana (vital force) through the Nadis (energy channels) which flow in and around the muscles, organs and tissues. The smooth flow of prana, oxygen and nutrients are essential to the healthy function of our bodies, our minds and our souls.
